The Thursday Night Show is broadcast on internet radio and patronised by bass player Herbie Flowers, a well-known session musician who has recorded with Paul McCartney, Lou Reed and David Bowie to name but a few. July 26th 2018 was the Patrons Night 6th anniversary and it is held on the third Thursday of every month at Big Beach Cafe, owned by DJ Fat Boy Slim.
To escape the sweltering heatwave, it was only five minutes from Hove seafront. There was even a paddling pool for instant relief. Nick Flowers, son of Herbie, hosted in his soothing, laid back manor and presented each of the eight live local acts. Nick played the cahon with covers band ‘Sweet and Lowdown’ and tonight they lost a piano player and gained a flute. Among his many other collaborations, drummer Nick also plays with ‘Anti Dim Outfit‘ who recently got some BBC Radio 6 airtime.
The flute added a lovely addition to songs ‘Harvest Moon’, ‘Everybody’s Talking at Me’, ‘It Must be Love’. The evening provided and continues to provide an encouraging and nurturing environment for amateur and more experienced local musicians. Songs from the technicians working there were also welcomed and they are strong support for people in recovery. Many of the audience and musicians were members of New Note Orchestra. The recording of the night can be heard here.
